Types of Slip and Fall Injuries - Law - Personal Injury

Injuries that come about due to a slip and fall accident range in severity. The victim may just sustain scrapes and bruises, but they may also experience more sever injuries, such as broken bones that require more involved medical treatment and healing time. Here are some of the more serious injuries that may occur:

Sprains and StrainsA sprain is when you stretch or tear ligaments, fibrous tissue that connect your bones to one another in the joints.

While a strain sounds similar to a sprain, a strain involves tendons and muscles. Tendons are fibrous cords of tissue that connect muscles to bones. Common locations for strains are the lower back and hamstring muscles.Treatments - If you suffer only a minor strain or sprain, your doctor will most likely prescribe rest and recommend ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

In some instances when the strain or sprain is worse, you may need to do some form of physical therapy. You may also need to immobilize the area with a brace or splint. You should always apply ice to your wound as soon as possible to reduce swelling. In the worst case scenario, if you tear or rupture ligaments, tendons, or muscles, you may need surgery.Broken Bones - Slip and fall injuries may result in broken bones. You may go to brace yourself, fracturing you arm or wrist. Or maybe you will brake your ankle or leg coming down on them awkwardly.Treatments - The way a broken bone is treated depends upon which bone or bones are broken, and how severely they have been injured. The type of pain killer will also depend upon the severity of the wound. You may be recommended an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil), or a prescription narcotic, such as oxycodone (Percocet), if your pain is more serious.Traumatic Brain InjuriesTraumatic b rain injuries (TBI) usually occur when someone experiences a significant blow to the head. A traumatic brain injury occurs when the brain slams against the inside of the skull after the initial impact.

There may be a bruise to the brain (concussion), torn nerve fibers and bleeding. A mild case of TBI can cause confusion and a headache, but the more severe instances are deadly.Treatments - Some head trauma may only require some rest and over-the-counter pain medicine. You should always be cautious and consult your doctor. Sometimes injuries can occur without your knowledge, which underscores the need to seek medical advice after a blow to your head.

There are three stages treating a traumatic brain injury: acute, subacute, and chronic. The acute stage concentrates on the most important task: saving the person's life. This includes unblocking airways, assisted breathing, keeping blood circulating, and monitoring potential brain swelling.Once a victim is stabilized the subacute stage of treatment begins. The primary goals here are to detect complications early, prevent additional injuries, and to facilitate neurological and functional recovery. In the final chronic stage of treatment medical professionals address long-term rehabilitation and treating impairments.Spinal Cord InjuriesIn 2008, it was estimated that 259,000 Americans were suffering from spinal cord injuries, which is when spinal cord damaged results in a loss of mobility or feeling.Treatment - A spinal cord injury will never be minor enough to treat at home. While they vary in severity, you will need medical treatment. There is no way to reverse damage to a s pinal cord, but researchers are working on new and innovative treatments and medications that may promote nerve cell regeneration or improve nerve function.

In the early stages of treatment, doctors focus on preventing shock, maintaining breathing, and avoiding further damage. There may be some sedation to prevent movement.Your slip and fall injury may have happened accidentally or by your own negligence. However, if someone else is responsible, you should consider contacting a personal injury attorney.
